Does Your Church Need an App or a Website? An Honest Guide
Before you spend money on a custom church app, read this. A plain-language guide to choosing between a website, a progressive web app and a native mobile app…
Church leaders often ask us, "Should we build an app?" It is a good question, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want people to do. Technology should serve your ministry goals, not the other way round.
Start with the goal, not the tool
Write down the three most important things you want people to do online. For example:
- Find our service times and location
- Give or support a project
- Join a small group and stay connected during the week
The answer to "app or website?" comes from that list.
Option 1: A great website
Best for: being found, first impressions, information, sermons, events and giving.
Every church needs one. A good church website is fast on mobile, easy to read, shows clear next steps ("Plan a visit", "Request prayer", "Chat on WhatsApp") and appears in Google search results.
Cost: the lowest of the three options, and easy to maintain.
Option 2: A progressive web app (PWA)
Best for: churches that want an app-like experience without app-store costs.
A PWA is a website that can be installed on a phone's home screen, work offline and load instantly. Members tap an icon just like a normal app, but you maintain one codebase that works on every device.
Cost: moderate. It is often the smartest choice for small and medium ministries.
Option 3: A native mobile app
Best for: daily engagement features such as reading plans, habit tracking, push notifications, live chat or offline media.
Native apps live in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. They can deliver the richest experience, but they cost more to build and maintain, and they only pay off if people will open them regularly.
Cost: the highest, with ongoing updates for new phone operating systems.
A simple rule of thumb
- If people visit occasionally, invest in a website.
- If people visit weekly, consider a PWA.
- If people engage daily, a native app may be worth it.
Questions to ask any developer
- Who will own the code, domain and data?
- How will member data be protected?
- What does it cost to maintain each year, not just to build?
- Can we update content ourselves?
